Book swapping

July 15th, 2008 by Wendy

Calling all book lovers (and tree lovers) out there!

We’ve now got a book-swapping shelf in the library for, yes, you guessed it, women to swap books with each other. As well as being a great way to save money and discover new authors, book swapping can also help us to make a positive change in terms of our environmental impact.

Subtle changes

July 7th, 2008 by admin

You may notice a few subtle changes to the design of the blog. (You may not. They are subtle…)

This is just to line it up with a few changes we’ll (I’ll) be making to the main website over the summer.

Try increasing or decreasing the text size in your browser (View > Text size in Firefox) - it should change size smoothly.

10k Triumph!

May 19th, 2008 by Laura

So, the 10k crept up on us a lot quicker than I had expected, and with all the training and fundraising that took place on the actual morning of the run I felt less than confident. Thankfully, with the help of a wonderful team, lots of encouragement, and pure adrenaline, the race was run - and I found it a lot easier than expected. So, on that note - I encourage anyone who is even thinking about running a 10k to go for it. The atmosphere, encouragement from people on the sidelines, and people in the race - not to mention friends and family - all makes it a really satisfying experience. And if like me you have never run before (well apart from the small amount of training I did in the weeks leading up to the run) you will feel such a sense of achievement afterwards and be signing up for the next one as quickly as possible.

We are the Champions!

May 19th, 2008 by Sue John

Well, dear readers, supporters and friends world-wide…… we did it! GWL’s wee team all completed the Glasgow Women’s 10K in style. We ran, we walked and we finished. Bedecked in our medals and devouring our complimentary bananas, we gathered after the race in our ‘Keep Glasgow Women’s Library Running’ T-shirts as we were mobbed and cheered by our adoring fans in Bellahouton Park. Thank you so much for all your sponsorship and support - it’s very much appreciated. It’s not too late if you still want to sponsor us in retrospect:-

What a Turner of Events!

May 16th, 2008 by Sue John

Well, how exciting. Our old mucker Cathy Wilkes has been nominated for this year’s Turner Prize. WELL DONE Cathy! We are so thrilled for Cathy and wish her good luck in what will be a tough competition this year, with women well represented. Cathy has been a good friend of GWL for many years - she was involved in Women in Profile (from where GWL sprang) from 1988 (the Herald recently quotes her as having helped found GWL which isn’t strictly true) and she greatly contributed to the work of WIP before, during and after Glasgow’s European Year of Culture in 1990. She’s a great talent and I am looking forward to seeing her work in London’s Tate Gallery in October. Bring on all the controversy! Cathy’s work will stand up for itself, so go girl and just enjoy this ride!

“Made in the Shade” Craft Fair

May 7th, 2008 by Helen

I picked up a leaflet for this at the GFT last night, and thought I’d bring it up here - “Made In The Shade” is an independent craft fair run by the Glasgow Craft Mafia (great name!) and the Creative Entrepreneurs Club at the Lighthouse on Saturday 24th May.

From their MySpace page:

“Bringing the crème of the city’s independent and creative crop together for the first time, the vision of ‘Made In The Shade’ is to showcase young design talent, to encourage customers to relish in the exclusivity of the handmade one-off and to promote the local businesses who are working hard to carve out creative identities amidst a mountain of mass-produced and carbon-negative products.”

If you’re interested in buying handmade crafts from local craftpeople, but can’t make it to the market, try looking on Etsy’s ‘Shop Local‘ section. Etsy is an online marketplace for buying & selling all things handmade, connecting small business and individuals with buyers.

(Etsy has a growing reputation online as an example of the increasing specialization of e-commerce (and commerce generally) - taking advantage of the ‘long tail’ model… ah, I’ll stop there - it’s basically just a good place to find cute handmade stuff online)

Feminist filmmaker Helke Sanders in Glasgow

May 7th, 2008 by Laura

I would like to draw your attention to an event organised by the Goethe-Institut that might be of interest to GWL blog readers. Acclaimed feminist director Helke Sander is in Glasgow. She will show her film “Break the power of the manipulators” on Sunday, 11 May in the GFT and participate in a panel discussion at the Goethe-Institut about the impact of the ‘revolt’ in 1968.

Click here for info on Helke Sanders from Wikipedia

Both politically and artistically, this pioneer of the German women’s movement and of filmmaking has always been far ahead of her time. She began to examine social structures and political visions consistently
from the perspective of women and children and has continued to follow this principle to the present time. The radically unconventional films evolve a new, experimental filmic language and elude simple readings.

Independant Living with benefits…

April 30th, 2008 by Laura

A really interesting opportunity has been brought to my attention recently, so I thought I should share the love and bring it to the attention of others. I have just put a card up on our notice board that reads…

“I am a woman in her 50’s who is interested in creating an alternative way of living in the West End of Glasgow. Ideally a house share environment, providing a balance between privacy and an opportunity for informal companionship. Living independantly and compatibly. I would like to meet other women who are considering a change in their living circumstances over a tea or coffee!”

If this sounds like something that you are interested in finding out more about then drop the library an email or give us a call and we can make the connection.

Calling All Poets

April 14th, 2008 by Laura

I received a letter this morning from Mslexia, their 2008 poetry competition deadline for entries is the 25 April so if anyone wants to have work put forward you should check out their website for the guidelines, www.mslexia.co.uk

Also, the theme for the New Writing to be published in their issue 39 is “Bugs” and the deadline for this is 13 June 2008. They pay £25 for every poem they publish and £15 per thousand words of prose.

Hope that this inspires some to get writing, and please let us know if you get anything published in the magazine, or blog about it, or let me know so I can blog about it!

Happy writing :o)
